Charity History
Lasers for Life was established in 1987 to support the growing use of laser therapy as an alternative to conventional surgery. Our work is now extended to cover all areas of diagnosis and therapy where lasers are involved.
As circumstances changed, the Charity reassessed its requirements and identified its future needs. Based on the simple objective to push back the barriers of medical knowledge it was obvious that a new facility would endorse Liverpool's leading role in medical laser treatment.
Thanks largely to Littlewoods Lotteries, the University of Liverpool, other major benefactors and the committed donations from generous individuals and organisations; the dream became a reality on 19 January 2000. On that day the Rt Hon the Lord Owen CH, a Patron of the charity, officially opened the Lasers for Life Medical Laser Institute. This special day witnessed the fulfilment of our long-held vision for the advancement of medical laser research. It is fitting that this Institute is based in Liverpool, home of so many firsts.
In collaboration with a number of academic and industrial partners, Lasers for Life seeks to improve the quality of life for those suffering from life-threatening and debilitating diseases. Although there are other clinical laser centres in the UK, the Medical Laser Institute is uniquely placed to combine science, engineering and medicine. Access to non-medical expertise such as computer programming, fibre optic technology, laser engineering, clinical engineering and electronics is readily available.
Lasers for Life Charity Headquarters and the Medical Laser Institute Relocate to new premises:
7th January 2002 saw Lasers for Life leave the Thornley Building, which had been our home for over four years, to our newly refurbished establishment in the Hartley Building.
Our sadness at leaving our former workplace was tempered by the prospect of moving to specifically designed accommodation. With meticulous attention to the available space and in order to incorporate the MLI and charity offices, we have created six laboratories instead of the four we previously occupied, and each larger than before, as well as a clean room and a large teaching facility.
